The 36,000-kilovolt safe and sealed manganese silicon alloy DC ore thermal furnace built by Inner Mongolia Jinglei Industrial Co., Ltd.
By the end of 2024, a piece of news in the domestic ferroalloy industry attracted much attention: The 36,000 kVA safe and sealed manganese silicon alloy DC ore-thermal furnace built by Inner Mongolia Jinglei Industrial Co., Ltd. in Fengchuan Industrial Park, Fengzhen City, Ulanqab City has been operating safely and stably for over a month, and all indicators have reached the expected targets. This large-capacity and fully sealed manganese silicon ore-thermal furnace is the first of its kind globally. This marks the entry of Ulanqab City's ferroalloy industry into the 'high-intelligence and green' category.
In the minds of many, ferroalloy is a backward industry with heavy dust, severe pollution, and high energy consumption, known as "big, black, and stupid." How did it transform into a "high-intelligence and green" industry in Ulanqab City?
The Rise and Transformation of the Ferroalloy Industry
The ferroalloy industry in Ulanqab City started in the 1990s, when only a few small ferroalloy enterprises were introduced. The production capacity was small and negligible in the region and nationwide.
Ferroalloy is an energy-intensive industry, with annual electricity consumption measured in "hundreds of millions of kilowatt-hours." To gain competitiveness in the industry, enterprises must reduce energy consumption costs. Ulanqab City is rich in wind and light resources and has abundant green electricity, with an effective wind time of 7300 to 8100 hours per year and an annual sunshine duration of over 3200 hours.
At the same time, the production of ferroalloy requires a large amount of raw materials such as iron ore, coke, manganese ore, and chrome ore. Currently, China is one of the world's largest importers of ore, mainly importing ore from South Africa, Australia, and other places, but Tianjin Port (4.460, -0.02 , -0.45% is one of the main ports for ore entry. Ulanqab City is only about 500 kilometers away from Tianjin Port, saving enterprises a lot of raw material transportation costs.
With the advantages of sufficient power supply and convenient logistics and transportation, Ulanqab City has attracted a number of ferroalloy projects with industry influence, and the ferroalloy industry has gradually become a pillar industry in the region.
However, traditional ore-thermal furnaces and backward production processes are bottlenecks restricting the development of the industry. To change this situation, in 2021, Ulanqab City, with a determination to make a decisive change, comprehensively implemented the "three batches" and "five-transformation" actions, namely eliminating a batch, upgrading a batch, and strengthening the chain in a batch, as well as dust-proof sealing, energy consumption benchmarking, resource recycling, intelligent transformation, and green energy transformation.
The determination and efforts of Ulanqab City in promoting industrial transformation and upgrading are impressive, and the results are remarkable.
Through a series of measures, Ulanqab City's ferroalloy industry has undergone a magnificent transformation. Data shows that from January to November 2024, the output reached 10.315 million tons, accounting for 72.4% of the total output in the region and 31.4% of the total national output. From 2022 to 2024, Ulanqab City's ferroalloy output has maintained a leading position in the region and nationwide for three consecutive years, making it the largest ferroalloy industrial cluster in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and the largest ferroalloy producing prefecture-level city in China.
Intelligent Transformation: Leading the Ferroalloy Industry Towards Modernization
Intelligent transformation is an important cornerstone for the high-quality development of the ferroalloy industry in Ulanqab City. In recent years, ferroalloy enterprises in Ulanqab City have actively embraced intelligent and digital technologies, continuously introducing new technologies and processes to promote the development of the industry towards high-end and intelligent directions.
When visiting the production plant of Inner Mongolia Xintai Yuan New Materials Co., Ltd., it was found that, in contrast to the bustling production scene, there were only a few workers scattered throughout the large plant area.
On the second floor of the production workshop, several meters away from the furnace platform, in the central control room, the furnace operator was directing the "discharge robot " work. What is admirable is that the discharge scene is completely different from the traditional impression. The discharge work, which originally required several people to cooperate, has become much easier.
Enterprises use 5G+, big data, cloud computing, and other high-tech means to expand the construction of information application scenarios, realizing the automation, intelligence, and visualization of the production process. In the Fengzhen Smart Park pilot project, many enterprises have implemented the construction of 5G smart factories, realizing machine replacement of human labor, and the effect of enterprise intelligent construction is prominent. The discharge link has been automated, with some enterprises replacing it with automated discharge robots, and the fine-tuning link has also realized machine replacement. These intelligent applications not only reduce labor intensity and save labor but also improve the safety of discharge operations.
In 2024, with the official establishment of the Ulanqab Ferroalloy Science and Technology Innovation Research Institute, the intelligent level of the ferroalloy industry in the region will be further improved. The research institute will be dedicated to technological innovation and research and development in the ferroalloy industry, promoting the development of the industry towards higher quality and sustainability.
Green Transformation: A Leap from Backwardness to Leadership
The green transformation of the ferroalloy industry in Ulanqab City is a profound self-revolution. Faced with the severe challenges of low equipment level, large environmental pollution, and high unit energy consumption, Ulanqab City seeks transformation through "green", using "three batches" and "five-transformation" as a lever to comprehensively promote green industrial upgrading.
In the green transformation, ferroalloy enterprises in Ulanqab City have achieved dust-proof sealing, energy consumption benchmarking, and resource recycling. By eliminating backward production capacity and introducing green technologies, the overall technological equipment level and environmental protection level of the ferroalloy industry have reached the leading level in China. Today, when visiting the various ferroalloy industrial parks in Ulanqab City, one will not see black smoke billowing into the sky nor smell pungent odors. Instead, there are clean and tidy factory areas and high-tech production lines.
Solid waste resource recycling is the secret to the transformation and development of the ferroalloy industry in Ulanqab City. In Ulanqab City, the residual heat, waste gas, and waste slag produced from producing a piece of ferroalloy are all "exhausted". Enterprises use the waste heat from ore-thermal furnaces to provide winter heating for residents, and the remaining waste slag is turned into rock wool, sound-absorbing boards, and other building materials. These measures not only reduce environmental pollution but also achieve resource recycling and improve resource utilization efficiency.
On November 15, 2024, the Fengchuan Circular Economy Development Zone Fengzhen Industrial Park green power supply project was successfully put into operation. This is the first industrial park green power supply project in the autonomous region. The project has a newly installed capacity of 80 megawatts of new energy, and a chemical energy storage device is also equipped. Inner Mongolia Wangyuan Industrial Co., Ltd. was the first to use green electricity, accounting for about 30% of its total electricity consumption. Don't underestimate this 30% of green electricity use; it can save 60,000 tons of coal and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 160,000 tons.
During the green transformation process, ferroalloy enterprises in Ulanqab City have increased their research and development investment and introduced and independently developed a series of new technologies and processes.
To further promote the DC furnace smelting technology and provide demonstration and guidance, Inner Mongolia Jinglei Industrial Co., Ltd. plans to further expand its production capacity and invest another 4 billion yuan to build 8 sets of 36,000 kV safe and sealed manganese silicon alloy DC ore thermal furnaces and 2 sets of 36,000 kV safe and sealed DC manganese-rich slag furnaces for a source-grid-load-storage integrated project, creating a million-ton green manganese silicon alloy enterprise." Du Huayu, general manager of Inner Mongolia Jinglei Industrial Co., Ltd., said.
